Why Hair Colour Looks Different in Different Lighting

Why Does My Hair Colour Look Different Outside the Salon? A Brisbane Colourist Explains

Ever loved your hair in the salon mirror, only to catch your reflection outside and wonder where that beautiful colour went? There’s actually a little science behind it.

Picture this.

You’ve just had your hair done. The colour is beautiful, the blow-dry is sitting perfectly, and you’re already planning where to go so someone can appreciate your new hair.

Then you step outside.

Suddenly, your creamy blonde looks warmer. Your brunette seems lighter. Or that beautiful ash tone you loved in the salon mirror looks completely different in your bathroom.

Sound familiar?

Before you question your colour, there’s something worth knowing: the way we see hair colour changes depending on the light around us.

And that’s only part of the story.

At Elevate Salon, our Brisbane City colourists know that beautiful hair isn’t just about achieving the right shade. It’s about understanding how that shade will look, feel and wear in everyday life.

1. The Same Hair Colour Can Look Different in Different Lighting

This is probably the biggest surprise for clients.

Hair colour doesn’t exist independently of light. What you see is influenced by how light interacts with your hair and how your eyes interpret the reflected colour.

Warm indoor lighting can make blonde hair appear more golden. Cooler lighting can make the same blonde look ashier or more muted.

Step into direct sunlight, and you may notice warmth or dimension that wasn’t as obvious indoors.

Even two mirrors in the same house can give you a slightly different impression of your colour.

Our advice? Before deciding whether you love your new shade, look at it in natural daylight as well as indoor lighting.

Not harsh, direct midday sunlight. Just soft, natural daylight where you can see the colour clearly.

And if you’re bringing inspiration photos to your appointment, remember that lighting, editing and camera settings may influence the shade you’re seeing.

2. Why Your Blonde Can Start Looking Yellow or Brassy

Here’s where things get a little more technical.

When hair is lightened, some of its natural pigment is broken down. Depending on your starting colour and how far the hair is lifted, underlying yellow, orange or reddish warmth can remain.

Your colourist then uses a toner to refine that warmth and create the finished shade.

That gorgeous beige blonde, soft champagne or cool ash finish? Toning often plays an important role in achieving it.

But toners aren’t permanent.

As the deposited tone gradually fades through washing, heat styling and environmental exposure, some underlying warmth may become more visible again.

That doesn’t necessarily mean your original lightening service has changed. It may simply mean the tonal balance has shifted.

This is why blonde maintenance matters.

The right shampoo, sensible heat styling and occasional professional toning can make a noticeable difference to how your blonde looks between appointments.

And a small tip: purple shampoo isn’t the answer to every blonde problem. It’s designed to counter certain yellow tones, and overusing it can leave some hair looking dull or uneven.

3. Your Hair’s Porosity Can Change How Colour Behaves

Two people can have the same colour applied and walk away with very different results.

Why?

Because the condition and history of their hair aren’t the same.

Hair porosity describes how readily hair absorbs and releases moisture. It also influences how colour products interact with the hair.

Hair that has been repeatedly lightened, heat-styled or chemically treated may have more porous sections, particularly through the ends.

These areas can sometimes absorb tone more intensely or lose certain colour molecules more quickly.

It’s one reason your ends might look cooler than your roots, or why some parts of your colour seem to fade faster than others.

A skilled colourist considers this before formulating your colour.

Sometimes that means using different formulas through different sections. Sometimes it means recommending a treatment or adjusting the colour plan.

Great colour isn’t simply about choosing a beautiful shade. It’s about knowing how to achieve it on the hair sitting in front of you.

4. Why Your Hair Looks Shinier After a Salon Appointment

Let’s talk about that salon finish.

You know the one. Your hair feels silky, catches the light beautifully and somehow looks more expensive.

Professional styling plays a big part.

When hair is smoothly blow-dried, the strands are better aligned, helping create a more even surface for light reflection.

That can make your colour appear glossier, richer and more dimensional.

At home, humidity, frizz or a different styling technique can change the way light reflects from your hair.

The colour itself may be exactly the same, but the finish can make it appear different.

Brisbane’s humidity can make this particularly noticeable, especially for hair that’s naturally prone to frizz.

A professional gloss, suitable conditioning products and good heat protection can help maintain a polished finish between appointments.

5. The Instagram Photo Isn’t Always the Whole Story

We’ve all done it.

Saved a gorgeous blonde transformation, zoomed in on the colour and decided, that’s exactly what I want.

But here’s what a photograph doesn’t always tell you.

Was the photo taken under studio lighting? Was the hair freshly toned? Was the image edited? What was the client’s natural colour? And how many appointments did it take to achieve that result?

A beautiful inspiration photo is a great starting point.

But it’s a reference, not a guaranteed formula.

At Elevate Salon, we encourage clients to bring their inspiration photos. They’re incredibly helpful for understanding the overall direction, whether that’s a soft lived-in blonde, rich brunette or something more dramatic.

Then we look at your natural base, previous colour, hair condition and how much maintenance you’re comfortable with.

That’s where the real work begins.

6. When Is a Colour Change Normal — and When Should You Speak to Your Hairdresser?

Some changes in appearance are completely expected.

Your colour looking warmer in afternoon sunlight, for example, doesn’t automatically mean something has gone wrong.

Neither does a gradual shift in tone over several weeks.

But if your colour looks noticeably uneven, develops an unexpected tone or simply doesn’t reflect what was agreed during your consultation, it’s worth speaking to your stylist.

Don’t feel you have to diagnose the problem yourself or try to fix it with another box colour.

Sometimes a small tonal adjustment is enough. Other situations need a more detailed assessment.

At Elevate, we believe communication is part of a good colour service, not something that ends when you leave the chair.

The Secret to Beautiful Colour? A Great Consultation.

The most successful colour appointments often begin with a conversation rather than a colour chart.

What do you love about your current hair?

What frustrates you?

How often do you want to visit the salon?

Do you prefer a bright, freshly coloured finish or something softer that grows out naturally?

And perhaps most importantly, how do you want your hair to look on an ordinary Tuesday morning, not just immediately after a professional blow-dry?

These are the details that help a colourist create something truly personal.

At Elevate Salon Brisbane City, our team works with Wella Professionals colour systems and takes a consultation-led approach to blondes, balayage, brunettes and colour correction.

Our focus is on creating colour that complements you, respects your hair’s condition and fits comfortably into your lifestyle.

Because beautiful hair should still feel beautiful when you’re the one styling it.
